On Saturday, September 17, the artist who thrives on controversy posted a picture of what looked to be her face following surgery along with the remark, "I done smthn insane!" The singer's head, jaw, and face were bandaged in the photograph; her face was also covered in surgical gauze.

She also seems to clarify that her new record is ready and that the finishing touches were done in a highly sterile setting in another tweet.

"Album finished, now mixing. She stated, "My friend and I finished the last song in the plastic surgery clinic since they wouldn't let me go, and we were joking because this was the most Hollywood moment of all time. I have 20 songs saved so I might split it into BOOK 1 and BOOK 2.

At the time of publication, there was no new information about the album, although Grimes said that she is still deciding on its format and tracklist. When Grimes subsequently noted, "just got a mix back for 'the infinite assassin,' I shall be monitoring mixes after my infants sleep, the job appears to be proceeding during convalescence." If the sequel to 2020's Miss Anthropocene would still be released this year, she said in response to a fan query on Sunday (Sept. 18), "Im going to over Estimate and suggest Jan rather than under Estimate like the past 2 times. Currently working on securing clearance for the next single release.

Grimes replied, "Yeah there's a decent chunk ready but just one video filmed fml I had a rly bad medical crisis from May to July so everything is late - sorry," in response to a follower who questioned whether the projected 2023 drop meant there would be a single between now and January. In August, Grimes said she scheduled a consultation with a plastic surgeon two years prior with the idea that she could want to "alter things up in my mid-30s." Then Grimes, 34, said that the bodily modifications she was most interested in were cosmetic vampire tooth caps and surgically inserted elf ears, asking her Twitter followers whether anybody had "done elf ear mods with a decent outcome?" Her question was accompanied by the admission that she was "scared about ear cartilage having a hard time recovering," especially worrying that even though she had always desired elven ears, as a musician the operation "sounds hazardous."

While we don't yet know what, if any, physical modifications Grimes has had, her ex-partner and Tesla entrepreneur Elon Musk, who has two small children with the musician, had something to say about her ambitions. In an unsolicited assessment of her plans, he tweeted on August 16 that "the disadvantage of elf ear surgery certainly outweighs the advantage."

The song "Sci-Fi," which Grimes co-wrote with The Weeknd and his longtime producer, Illangelo, is referred to as a "soon-to-be-ubiquitous-banger" and is part of the collection that Grimes has previously referred to as a "space opera."
